What is a Makerspace? It is a place for anyone, in particular students, to come and tinker, create, learn new skills or just utilize equipment. Over the last 2 years, I have started implementing a Makespace at my Jr/Sr high school. It is still in its infancy. However, I have put lots of time into research, writing grants and visiting existing Makerspaces to help me reach my vision of what we want our Makerspace to not only look like but what are goals are of having a Makerspace in our school. In this session, I will present what a Makerspace is, how you can start one in your school, why you should start one in your school as well as discuss roadblocks I have encountered and how I have overcome those. I also welcome anyone who has already been involved in Makerspaces to hold an open discussion of issues they are encountering or ideas they have to improve Makerspaces.
Jo Ann has taught science for 25 years and most recently robotics for the last 3. Over the past 2 years she has started a Makerspace in her jr-sr high school. She has lived in Clinton for the last 20 years with her husband and 3 boys. Jo Ann has always been a huge supporter of STEM/STEAM careers especially getting girls interested in those fields.
